A side event at the 1st session of the LDC5 Preparatory Committee
Introduction
Food, water and ecosystems are consistently ranked as the topmost systems vulnerable to climate risks by governments through their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and National Communications. These areas also occupy a greater share of adaptation support under the Green Climate Fund and the Global Environment Facility. A nexus between these systems in adapting to climate change is imperative. The side event will focus on the nexus between food, water and natural ecosystems to scale up climate change adaptation in the LDCs. It will highlight emerging best practice solutions including active monitoring of crop production using remote sensing, and methods and tools for effectively addressing the interlinkages and complexities in nexus approaches.
Objective
The side event will discuss specific gaps and needs in climate risk management at the regional level, with a focus on food, water and ecosystems, and identify priority needs that should be addressed in the next 10 years to ensure LDCs can make steady and significant progress in addressing the adverse effects of climate change amidst other challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic.
