UN Climate Change News, Bonn, 24 January 2018 – A French startup that has developed green-tech solutions to reduce the environmental impact of automobiles is working with the UN to fight climate change, making use of innovative technology and carbon offsets.
The company WeNow has become a signatory of Climate Neutral Now, an initiative of UN Climate Change that encourages individuals and organizations to measure and reduce their carbon emissions, and to offset whatever cannot be avoided.
As a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, and with emissions form the sector projected to steeply grow under a business as usual scenario, the transport sector needs groundbreaking solutions to progress towards climate neutrality.
Global greenhouse emissions must peak soon, and the balance between the output of man-made greenhouse gases and absorption – known as “climate neutrality” – must be reached by the second half of this century for the international community to achieve the central goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement, namely to limit global warming to well below 2°C and as close to 1.5°C as possible.
Smart Box Allows Drivers to Monitor their Emissions
WeNow has taken up the challenge by designing a “smart box” helping drivers to monitor their emissions, give them advice to reduce their fuel consumption, and compensate the remaining emissions by supporting green projects.
“At WeNow we have designed an innovative solution that helps companies, organizations and individuals reduce the carbon footprint of their cars. We are proud to be active leaders of the Climate Neutral Now initiative and help measure, reduce and offset the carbon emissions in the transport sector,” said Marion Daras, Customer Relationship Management.
By signing the Climate Neutral Now pledge, WeNow is also measuring, reducing and offsetting the carbon footprint of their activities as a company.
“WeNow is an example of a startup company showing creativity and leadership in the way towards climate neutrality in the transport sector, thereby making an important contribution to the fight against climate change”, said Niclas Svenningsen, who heads up the Climate Neutral Now initiative of UN Climate Change.
