In 2001, the Adaptation Fund was established under the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It finances concrete adaptation projects and programmes in developing country Parties that will help residents build resilience and adapt to the effects of climate change. The Fund is financed from the 2 per cent share of proceeds on the project activities of the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism, as well as other sources of funding such as contributions by developed countries and private donors.
So far US$ 232 million has been allocated in 40 countries, making a substantial contribution to boosting the climate resilience of the most vulnerable countries.
