LIMA CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE

Momentum for Change showcased the 2014 Lighthouse Activities during a series of special events at the Lima Climate Change Conference. From a sustainable cook stove demonstration to an Oscars-like award ceremony, all of our events put the Lighthouse Activities in the spotlight, showing that action on climate change is not only possible but that it is already happening. Here are some of the highlights.

WOMEN FOR RESULTS: SPECIAL EVENT

In the context of Gender Day, this event showcased shining examples of activities that demonstrate the critical leadership and participation of women in addressing climate change. It showcased the three Women for Results Lighthouse Activity winners from 2014.

A high-level panel featured a lively discussion among Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, Lakshmi Puri, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women, and Lorena Aguilar, Global Senior Gender Adviser with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

URBAN POOR: SPECIAL EVENT

This event showed how urban poor communities around the world are addressing climate change, while creating jobs and improving lives. It showcased the four Urban Poor Lighthouse Activity winners from 2014. The event was moderated by Ramiro Fernández, Climate Change Director with the AVINA Foundation and a member of the Momentum for Change Advisory Panel. Presenters from civil society and the public sector spoke about how action to address climate change by and for the urban poor is improving and transforming their lives.

Sustainable Cookstoves Demonstration

Famous Peruvian chefs Gastón Acurio and Virgilio Martínez prepared a traditional dish using fuel-efficient cookstoves from one of the Momentum for Change Award winners, Ibu Inspirasi, during COP20 in Lima. This clean technology provides social and environmental benefits to people all over the world, especially in developing countries. The chefs cooked alongside UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres and the Minister of the Environment of Peru, Manuel Pulgar Vidal. More than 50 journalists attended the event, generating dozens of media stories.

This exciting and inspiring evening event featured remarks from United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres.

To help celebrate and recognize the achievements of the 2014 Lighthouse Activities, attendees at the gala event were treated to powerful photos, inspirational videos and a lively musical performance by Novalima, a Latin Grammy-nominated band. Charly Alberti, Founder and Director of the Latin American sustainability organization R21, served as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies.

ICT Solutions: Special Event

This event brought together thought leaders and industry innovators to show how the increased use of ICT is reducing energy use, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and building resilience worldwide. Al Gore, Former VP of the United States of America, Laurence Tubiana, Special Representative for the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, and Kevin Moss, VP of Net Good and Environmental Strategy at BT, participated in a high-level discussion moderated by Nicolás Ibargüen of Fusion/Univision. The event also showcased the two 2014 ICT Solutions winners.

Financing for Climate Friendly Investment: Special Event

11 December 2014

This event showcased projects that help create low-carbon economic growth and highly resilient communities through the use of innovative financing mechanisms. Barbara Buchner, Senior Director of Climate Policy Initiative, made opening remarks at the event, which was moderated by Nicolás Ibargüen of Fusion/Univision.

The event showcased the three 2014 Financing for Climate Friendly Investment Lighthouse Activity winners.
