Background

This event will focus on the unique challenges and success stories faced by Caribbean Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) in the development and implementation of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

It will be a follow-up to the NDC 3.0 Workshop organized by the UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Centre for the Caribbean (RCC Caribbean) together with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the NDC Partnership, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) that took place from 17-18 October 2024 in Grenada.

The RCC Caribbean aims to continue promoting the development of inclusive, ambitious, and implementable NDCs that drive access to finance.

The side event will highlight both challenges and opportunities in NDC development and implementation while showcasing a robust support ecosystem within the Caribbean region. Practical guidance will also be provided to countries on integrating key sectors like energy, transport, and agriculture, ultimately strengthening collective efforts toward climate resilience and sustainable development.

Objectives

The objectives of this side event is to:

  • Share insights into the challenges and successes of NDC implementation in Caribbean countries.

  • Enhance understanding of regional dynamics and strategies for effective NDC design.

  • Highlight available support mechanisms, tools, and resources within the Caribbean.

  • Provide actionable guidance for integrating diverse sectors into NDCs for improved climate strategies.

Key takeaways:

  • The session, moderated by RCC Caribbean lead Mayra Santaella, was opened by RCC Global Lead Andrea Camponogara, followed by a setting the scene by RCO Barbados and Eastern Caribbean Simon Springett.

  • The interactive panel guided by questions was comprised of UNDP, NDCP, UNEP, Belize, Guyana and Dominican Republic representatives. The event also counted with a couple of interventions from the audience for panelists to share specific experiences.
