Background
Through the PCCB Network, this webinar was jointly organized by the United Nations University Vice-Rectorate in Europe (UNU-ViE) and Impulsouth. Youth are some of the most vulnerable groups to the lifelong environmental effects caused by climate change. More importantly, young people across the world have shown that they are eager and committed to take climate action. Meaningful youth participation acknowledges that it should be embedded in all dimensions, all cycles, and all levels of governance, and in multi-stakeholder settings.
Such engagement is not only necessary as it gives youth the chance to demonstrate their ideas and skills but also contributes to engendering a sense of ownership of the process, thereby safeguarding long-term processes to the Paris Agreement implementation.
This session discussed approaches to capacity-building that contribute to the implementation of climate action. It aimed to amplify the debate of necessary approaches and challenges existent to building capacities oriented towards youth engagement and, mainly, new opportunities and ways to enhance capacity-building initiatives for youth.
Objectives
- To identify gaps and challenges on building capacities for youth in climate action.
- Bridge ideas and contacts that can develop and move forward the discussion on youth participation, collecting new approaches and contributing to the discussion of ways to build capacities for youth, thinking locally, nationally, and internationally.
- To promote and facilitate knowledge exchange, and collaboration between young people, experts, and policymakers, particularly from the Global South, on opportunities for strengthening the capacities of youth in adaptation and climate action.
Expected Outcomes
- Improved political and social framework and platforms of more informed, target-oriented, and productive youth climate leaders.
- Documenting key discussion points and takeaway messages to guide and to contribute towards outreach efforts on capacity-building for youth on climate action.
