Celebrating 20 years of adaptation support to the least developed countries

The Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG) is one of the oldest constituted bodies under the Convention and the Paris Agreement, having been established in 2001. It is currently mandated to provide technical guidance and support to the LDCs on the process to formulate and implement NAPs and the implementation of the LDC work programme. Among its other many mandates, the LEG is also mandated to provide technical guidance and advice on accessing funding from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for the formulation and implementation of NAPs, together with the GCF secretariat. Furthermore, the LEG is mandated to engage a wide range of organizations in implementing its work programme.

Over the last 20 years, the LEG has proven the high quality of support it provides to the LDCs and other developing countries that avails of its products, including  technical guidelines on NAPs, workshop materials and participation in  NAP Expos. The LEG continues to evolve and progressively adjust its support modalities to the LDCs to ensure that activities are demand-driven and based on the needs of the LDCs.

As we mark the 20th year of adaptation support to the LDCs, we walk back memory lane, celebrate successes and talk about the lessons learned to help us ensure that all of these inform the path to the future, as we discuss the extension of the LEG's mandate at COP 26.

Objectives

The side event is a platform for the LEG to provide an update on its work in supporting LDCs on adaptation. The GEF and its agencies, the GCF and other relevant organizations that provide support to the LDCs, are also given the opportunity to share updates on their work.

This side event focused on key impacts and outcomes of the 20 years of support provided by the LEG based on its mandate under the Convention. The main objective is to optimize the opportunity to share positive messaging of what the LEG has done and how significant it is for the process and for the LDCs.
