UNFCCC Climate Change Conference COP 5
25 October - 5 November 1999, Bonn, Germany
Dear colleague,
International efforts to tackle the problem of global climate change will continue at a United Nations conference in Bonn, Germany, from 25 October to 5 November 1999. Some 5,000 participants from 150 countries are expected to attend the Fifth Session of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 5) to review political and technical issues that will determine how to achieve the goal of minimizing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases over the critical first decade of the 21st century.
In addition to strengthening the effectiveness of the 1992 Convention, governments have only 12 or 18 months in which to agree on the operational details of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, under which developed countries are committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by 5 % from 1990 levels by the period 2008-12.
The United Nations Information Centre in Bonn will handle media coordination including press accreditation at COP 5. Correspondents interested in covering the Conference can receive press accreditation by completing the attached form which should be returned together with a letter of assignment from an Editor/Bureau Chief and a photocopy of a valid professional press card, as soon as possible.
We are currently reviewing the possibilities of establishing a media centre close to the conference site with some basic facilities. It would help our planning if you could let us know your minimal requirements.
If you have any further inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Best regards,
Axel Wüstenhagen
Director, UNIC Bonn and
Media Coordinator, COP 5
