Information prepared by the Global Environment Facility to assist

the Subsidiary Body for Implementation in its review of the

financial mechanism

1. The Conference of the Parties (COP), at its second session (COP2), by its decision 11/CP.2, paragraph 4 (FCCC/CP/1996/15/Add.1) requested the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), at its fifth session, to undertake the review process referred to in decision 9/CP.1.

2. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has submitted a document in response to decision 11/CP.2 mentioned above, to assist the SBI in its review of the financial mechanism. The GEF document is attached in the annex to this note.

3. The SBI was invited to consider the document and make recommendations to the Conference of the Parties at its third session, to be held in Kyoto, Japan in December 1997 (11/CP.2, para. 4).
