Plant-for-the-Planet Academies is providing peer-to-peer education for children on climate change and sustainable action.
Fast facts:
-
Since 2008, more than 30,000 children from 45 countries have participated in over 500 Academies;
-
More than 46,000 of them are Ambassadors for Climate Justice. These are children between the ages of 9-12, who pass on their knowledge to other children, who train to become Ambassadors as well;
-
So far, this activity has planted more than 14 billion trees.
The problem
The children of Plant-for-the-Planet are not climate researchers and do not know whether the sea level will rise by 0.2 or two meters by the end of the century. The things the children do know for certain are that many of them will still be alive at the end of this century and that greenhouse gas emissions are intensified with every kilogram of carbon dioxide emitted through the use of carbon dioxide emitted through the use of crude oil, coal and natural gas.
The solution
Plant-for-the-Planet organizes one-day-workshops for children aged 9-12 worldwide, the so called Plant-for-the-Planet Academies. In these Academies children empower other children to become Climate Justice Ambassadors in order to enable them to take action for their own future. A Plant-for-the-Planet Academy builds on three basic elements, the so-called "three pillars" of an Academy. To create a successful Academy, educators and volunteers need to bring the children together, find financing and organize tree planting events.
Helping the planet
This activity is promoting climate action and inspiring a whole generation to become sustainable ambassadors and encourage others to do the same.
Helping people
At Academies for Climate Justice Ambassadors, young people deal with the causes and consequences of the climate crisis. They will learn about what every single person can do, how to give presentations, plant trees and to plan their own first actions. At the end of the Academy, they are each recognized as a Climate Justice Ambassador and receive a large package of informational materials.
Scaling Up
This activity wants to expand their global network by planting 1,000 billion trees worldwide and motivating a million children to become Climate Justice Ambassadors.
