Replacement of Street Lighting with LED – Argentina

p>The City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, has teamed up with Philips to implement an ICT solution that enables 72% of the city’s network of streetlights to be monitored and controlled remotely. The tailor-made ICT system, based on Philips’ CityTouch Telemanagement Platform, is resulting in efficiency gains, saving the city money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the same time.

Fast facts:

  • 50% savings in emissions;

  • 91,000 streetlights to be replaced with LED technology;

  • 60% monetary savings

The problem

Argentina is heavily dependent upon fossil fuels, which puts a great burden on the environment.

The solution

The telemanagement system allows each light point in the network to be monitored on an individual basis, resulting in the optimal operation of each luminaire and the programming of replacements or future maintenance tasks. The use of ICT means luminaire life-span and energy consumption can be monitored, which when combined with data on other external factors, can be used to further optimize power conservation.

Helping the planet

The use of the telemanagement system in conjunction with the replacement of 91,000 of the city’s lights with LED technology will help to decrease CO2 emissions by 38,500 tonnes per year, significantly greater than could be achieved by a simple conversion to LED lighting.

Helping people

This project strengthens business and competitiveness in the city, which helps stimulate the economy. The reduction of power costs for the city will save government resources that could be allocated to social programs.

Scaling up

This project can be replicated in any city with a public street lighting system. The technology used not only has a positive impact on environment through climate change mitigation – its remote control and dimming technology also lowers power costs, thus consituting an interesting investment for local governments. Many cities around the world, such as Los Angeles, Boston, Sydney, and London, have taken this step – albeit on a smaller scale.
