This activity influences driving behavior with a mobile app. Fuel consumption, carbon footprints and eco-driving behaviors are monitored via satellite equipped smartphones exchanging data with an ICT center to reduce carbon emissions via efficient driving patterns.
Fast facts:
- Driving a vehicle efficiently reduces fuel consumption;
- Based on 14% of transportation related emissions, around 0.6 gigatonnes or more than 1% of global emissions can be saved using this activity’s solution.
The problem
Transportation accounts for nearly one-quarter of global CO2 emissions. To achieve the necessary deep cuts in emissions, transportation must play a significant role.
The solution
This activity combines mobile devices with a mobile app to produce efficient driving behavior. A server-based component uses a core-application to detect and communicate a driver’s GPS position per second. The server component responds back to the device and in almost real time, the driver is led by a traffic light symbol (red = inefficient, yellow = neutral, green = efficient). By following the indicator/color on the device the driver is lead to optimize speed and save fuel by changing their driving behavior, reduce carbon emissions and noise, and save money. When drivers follow the traffic-light information, they can see savings between 4-15% for fuel consumption, reducing their carbon emissions.
Helping the planet
By using this app, drivers and companies with fleets of drivers can reduce their carbon footprint.
Helping people
Beneficiaries of this activity are logistic service providers, drivers and customers. The app is available in English, is intuitive and is barrier free, meaning anyone can use it.
Scaling Up
There is no limitation for the app, its services and devices. Servers can be installed to support more services with little effort. With more apps provided, more benefits can be achieved.
