Udbastu Foundation (UF) is conducting development activities to shed light on and address global climate change. The Ghore Ghore Durgow activity specifically focuses on the leadership roles of women when it comes to forest conservation and ecological agriculture.
Fast facts:
- Currently, more than 5,000 women are directly involved with this activity.
The problem
Due to the geographical location of Bangladesh, it is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, which has a huge impact on agriculture and infrastructure. More than 80% of the land is prone to flooding and about two thirds of Bangladesh’s population is engaged in agriculture.
The solution
Women who own property in Bangladesh are playing a major role in the agricultural sector by investing in climate-smart agricultural productivity and increasing energy access. Nearly 3 billion people globally still rely on traditional cookstoves and open fires to prepare food for their families. In most cases, women are responsible for cooking and spend several hours per week collecting fuel wood. Traditional cookstoves negatively impact the environment by releasing carbon emissions, so integrating women into the clean cookstove supply chain helps increase clean cookstove adoption rates while also creating new economic development opportunities. This activity is also promoting women’s leadership by training women to lead awareness campaigns.
Helping the planet
Female farmers in vulnerable areas are introducing salinity and drought resistant varieties of crops, improving salinity management, crop pest management, agronomic management, water harvesting and water use efficiency, crop intensification, alternative crop enterprises, postharvest practices and fertilizer management, which is minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.
Helping people
UF is providing training to the farming community, encouraging farmers to grow a range of indigenous and high yielding varieties of different drought and heat resistant crops and helping communities in rural areas strengthen their resilience and adapt to climate change.
Scaling Up
This activity has the potential to grow in size and reach more beneficiaries. It has established various types of scalable activities resulting in larger impacts that address climate change mitigation and adaptation, toolkit development and trainings and workshops with different stakeholders.
