Empowering the Rural Woman for Sustainable and Equitable Development aims to tackle poverty, environmental degradation and human rights in sub-Saharan Africa. This activity empowers women through sensitization, education and training on modern organic farming practices. These practices will in turn enable quality food production and soil conservation.
Fast facts:
- So far, about 3,500 women in a rural community in Tubah, Cameroon have directly benefitted from this activity;
- Over 2 million people will be positively impacted by this activity.
The problem
About 80% of the women in rural and vulnerable communities of Tubah depend solely on farming as a means for survival. But poverty and the lack of education has resulted in environmental degradation through poor farming practices.
The solution
This activity aims to turn problems into solutions through capacity building to enable women in rural and vulnerable communities to take positive approaches for advanced and sustainable methods of farming. This activity works with women leaders to identify, educate and train other women in leadership and climate change. Women learn about participatory approaches in community development activities and capacity building. This activity conducts exchange visits between women groups from other communities, fostering sharing experiences that empower women to seek and assume leadership roles.
Helping the planet
Women are learning modern organic farming practices and planting sustainable fruit trees, flowers and medicinal plants. This helps promote reforestation and protects and conserves soil and wildlife.
Helping people
Over two million inhabitants of the Tubah subdivision will be positively impacted by this activity. Modern organic farming is helping communities cultivate organic vegetables and fruits not only for food security, but also for medicinal purposes. Quality organic foods promote healthy living conditions and promote and encourage the more sustainable practices.
Scaling Up
This activity can be scaled up to reach other rural and vulnerable communities of Tubah. Forming women groups makes it easier to educate, train and equip women with the necessary technical know-how on how to fight climate change and also mitigate its impact on agricultural production.
