Busia Waste to Energy Eco-Briquette Production Enterprise - Uganda

This project is implementing waste sorting, collection and recycling in villages in Uganda. Women and youth groups in these villages are transforming the waste into eco-briquettes and crafts for extra income.

Key facts:

  • This activity is working in 24 village locations in Uganda;

  • Women and youth groups are transforming waste in eight locations.

The problem

Municipal solid waste management is one of the major challenges for urban regions. According to international experts, waste collection should be extended, sanitary landfills should replace existing dumpsites and recycling should be increased without affecting the municipal budgets.

The solution

This activity is encouraging people to recycle waste by making and selling eco-briquettes and crafts like paper beads. Informal waste collectors are selling plastic waste to factories for extra income. The factories can make a biochar product, which can be used for soil and crop yield improvement in urban gardens. This activity is encouraging farmers to practice organic composting and establish nurseries for tree seedlings.

Helping the planet

People in the community are encouraged to plant trees to reduce deforestation and aesthetically improve their physical environment.

Helping people

This activity is conducting participatory action research with village communities to improve waste management and hygiene in the villages using focus group discussions and photo mapping. Farmers are the current and potential absorbers of biowaste as fodder or fertilizer. Demonstration gardens that can use biowaste compost are established by farmers.
