Date: 25th May 2022
Location: Virtual

On 25 May 2022, an informative webinar was held by the UNFCCC secretariat and its Regional Collaboration Centers: RCC Kampala and RCC Lomé, along with development partners to share details on the dates and approaches of the NDC Synthesis Report and LT-LEDS Synthesis Report to be prepared in 2022 with Parties in Sub-Saharan Africa, and to solicit their perspectives in terms of their plans of submission of updates to NDCs or LT-LEDS in advance of COP27.

Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC secretariat, in her opening remarks emphasized how critical this year is in terms of increasing ambition as well as enhancing support to achieve that ambition in line with the Paris agreement.

Following the remarks, a presentation was given by the UNFCCC secretariat to provide an overview of the latest CMA decisions relevant to the preparation of NDCs and LT-LEDS, as well as on two Notifications shared with Parties on 22 April 2022 pertaining to the important dates and approaches for the NDC and LT-LEDS Synthesis Reports to be prepared by the secretariat by 21 October 2022 on the basis of the latest NDCs and LT-LEDS communicated by 23 September 2022. In addition, the current status on NDCs and LT-LEDS submission in the region was shared with the audience.

The webinar also brought together development partners, including NDC Partnership, 2050 Pathways Platform, and UNDP, to share more information on support available in the region for the development and update of NDCs and LT-LEDS in 2022 and how to access it.

The Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA) at its third session urged Parties that have not yet communicated new or updated NDCs to do so as soon as possible in advance of its fourth session1 and requested Parties to revisit and strengthen the 2030 targets in their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) as necessary to align with the Paris Agreement temperature goal by the end of 2022, taking into account different national circumstances. 2

The CMA at its third session urged Parties that have not yet done so to communicate, by CMA 4, LT-LEDS towards just transitions to net zero emissions by or around mid-century. The CMA also invited Parties to update their LT-LEDS regularly, as appropriate, in line with the best available science and noted the importance of aligning nationally determined contributions with LT-LEDS.3

On the 22nd of April, the UNFCCC secretariat sent a notification to Parties and observer groups informing them about the important dates and approaches for the NDC Synthesis Report and LT-LEDS Synthesis Report. The secretariat is planning to publish the 2022 version of the NDC and LT-LEDS synthesis reports by 21 October 2022, updated on the basis of the latest NDCs and LT-LEDS that have been communicated by 23 September 2022.
