Preparing the UNFCCC budget 2018-2019

Patricia Espinosa, the Executive Secretary of the Climate Change Secretariat, has presented to Parties the proposed UNFCCC budget for the biennium 2018-2019.

In an effort to enhance transparency and facilitate better understanding of the proposed budget, in addition to the formal documents, in this page the secretariat makes available background information and other supporting material. Additional information will be made available soon.

Proposed budget

The 2018-2019 UNFCCC budget is inspired by the vision and objectives of the historic Paris Agreement. It is designed to respond to the needs of all governments and help Parties achieve their ambitious objectives in the wake of the Agreement's rapid entry into force.

Building the budget together
The Executive Secretary and other senior staff will be actively reaching out to Parties and Groups to provide more information - and respond to questions - and secure feedback in the lead up to the formal consideration of the proposed budget. More information will be made available soon.

Finalization of the budget

The SBI at its 46th session (8 to 18 May 2017) will consider the UNFCCC budget 2018-2019 with a view to making a recommendation for approval by the Conference of the Parties at its 23rd session (6-17 November 2017) and endorsement by the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP) at its 13th session and the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA) at CMA 1-2.

Early engagement

The Executive Secretary engaged early with Parties in developing the UNFCCC budget to ensure it meets the needs of all Parties and achieves the objectives of the historic Paris Agreement. Three presentations have taken place in preparation of the budget submission:
