Inaugural Director
Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute
Professor Mohtar became the Inaugural Director of Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute, member of
Qatar Foundation, in January 2011. The inaugural director of the Purdue University Global Engineering
Program, Mohtar was responsible for leading the international programs of research and education in the
College of Engineering at Purdue. While in this office, Mohtar introduced the Global Design Team service
learning experience in 7 developing countries, and oversaw new research and education initiatives in France
and Mexico.
Mohtar’s professional research activities address sustainable development, resource management, and
environmental quality. He has designed and evaluated sustainable, trans-boundary water management programs
that address population growth and water shortage conditions. More recently, Mohtar has worked on the
development of metrics and assessment tools for defining and measuring global competency of engineering
students, in particular with regard to international educational experiences.
In July 2010, Mohtar received the Kishida International Award at the annual ASABE annual conference for his
leadership and contributions as a teacher and researcher, and the global impacts of his work on environmental
and natural researches conservation engineering. Mohtar has authored or coauthored more than 200 refereed
journal articles and conference proceedings, 3 books, and 10 book chapters, as well as over 80 invited
presentations at conferences and workshops worldwide. He has organized and chaired more than 80 technical
sessions at international conferences.
