Sean Green
Program Officer, Special Initiatives

Sean Green is a Program Officer for Special Initiatives. He manages a portfolio of grants that deal with
provision of solid waste management in informal communities, and grants designed to help informal waste
picker and slum dweller groups improve the rigor of the processes they use to collect business logistical and
member savings data. Sean worked for many years in the IT industry as an e-Commerce developer and consultant
before attending graduate school where his research focused on using computer-aided decision analytics on
health and development data to search for effective policies to address water and sanitation problems in
developing countries.
He joined the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation after completing a post-graduate fellowship at the Institute
for Health Metrics and Evaluations in Seattle where he worked on methods to determine cause of death in
countries which lack complete vital registration data. Sean holds a BSE in Civil Engineering from Princeton
University, an MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering as well as a Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy
from Carnegie Mellon University.
