|
|
|
|
Activity area: Mitigation; Adaptation
Location: Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya
Established: June 2012
|
|
The activity involves education and awareness-raising to increase climate resilience and mitigation
actions in host communities of the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya. Through waste management and river
conservation, the activity aims to reduce greenhouse gases emissions and improve carbon sinks,
contributing thus both to mitigating and community adaptation.
The objectives of the activity include:
- Raise awareness among the communities on waste management and climate change;
- Properly functioning waste water drains and riparian zones;
- Reduced instances of both air and waterborne infections from the waste;
- Conservation of bio-diversity;
- Construction of sieves along the waste water drains to create garbage collection points.
The activity contributes to both mitigation and adaptation through waste management and river
conservation.
The awareness-raising has resulted in greater understanding among the host communities about
climate change and the importance of conservation. Health risks have been reduced by efforts to
remove stagnant waste water from near homesteads.
