Messages and reflections for Joke 21 Oct 2005

On behalf of the citizens of Kyoto City, may I extend our sincere condolences on the untimely passing
away of Ms.Joke Waller-Hunter, who contributed to bringing the Kyoto Protocol into effect.

It was with great sorrow we learned that Mrs Joke Waller Hunter passed away last weekend. Joke was an
extraordinary lady. With her tremendous energy she devoted her working life to addressing environmental
issues, was a strong defender of the principles of sustainable development, and always found an
opportunity to fight the good fight for the environment. She was highly respected at OECD for her
professionalism and leadership, and much loved for taking the time to be a friend. We will remember her
as being exceptional, both as a dynamic spokesperson for the environment and as a friend. Our sincere
condolences go to her family and all her friends.

L'ensemble de l'UNITAR, et particulierement le programme Changements climatiques et ses
partenaires, ENDA, ERC et MIND sont profondement attristes du deces de Joke Waller Hunter. Nous avons
toujours trouve un appui enthousiaste et dynamique venant de Joke, toujours ouverte a toute initiative
orientee vers l'action et le terrain. C'etait un tres grand plaisir de travailler ensemble car
elle faisait passer sans ambiguite ses convictions et sa volonte de resoudre les problemes. Toute

During the process of implementing the UN Campus project in Bonn we met Joke Waller-Hunter and it was
both a pleasure and a priviledge to work together with her. We will always value her openness, her
kindness and her commitment. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with her. We are
saddened by her untimely passing.

I met Joke only a couple of times during her time at UN DSD, and was strongly impressed by her strong
personality, her sense of humour, and her dedication to her work. It is people like her who provide the
missing link between the grassroots and the political leaders who have to implement Sustainable
Development.

With deep sorrow we learned that Ms Joke Waller-Hunter has passed away. Her contribution to the climate

As many I was shocked when I learned about her passing away. It is very bad news for whole climate

I was distressed to hear that Joke had passed away after her illness. I did not realize it was that
serious when we last spoke on the phone. Although I have not worked with her personally, I have heard
from several sources she was well-respected among her colleagues. I am sure her contributions to UNFCCC
are known by anyone who has dealt with this subject for any period of time. Our world needs many more
giving individuals like Joke – those who work and don’t care who gets the credit for their
achievements. UNFCCC has served us well, and we know that excellence must stem from her leadership and
tenets of management.
