World Environment Day 2014 - Gender and Climate Action in SIDS

The UNFCCC secretariat joins this year's celebrations of World Environment Day on 5 June by highlighting the necessity to bring a gender dimension to planning, designing and implementing climate actions in small island developing States.

Women in action on climate change and the importance of gender dimensions for effective climate action

The tremendous scope and intrinsic linkages between gender and climate change have been captured in a wide range of resource materials, many of which are available on the websites of the UNFCCC Women and Gender constituency and the Global Gender and Climate Alliance, the UN Women's new 'Knowledge Gateway for Women's Economic Empowerment' and the UNFCCC's Climate Change Information Network Clearinghouse CC:iNet. Pacific Gender and Climate Change Toolkit
The Pacific Gender and Climate Change Toolkit has been designed to support climate change practitioners in the Pacific islands region to integrate gender considerations into their programmes and projects. The Toolkit also aims to support national governments, non-governmental organizations as well as regional and international organizations who are involved in managing and implementing climate change programmes. It addresses food security, water, energy and disaster risk reduction.


Integrating Gender in Disaster Management in SIDS
This UNDP publication 'Integrating Gender in Disaster Management in SIDS' provides practical guidance on how to make gender considerations, for both women and men, integral to work on disaster preparedness and response in SIDS.

Gender mainstreaming into climate action
This joint project by GenderCC and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community has built the capacity of community-based organizations and governmental institutions on gender mainstreaming in climate change adaptation and low-carbon energy projects in the Cook Islands, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Kiribati, Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands.

Pacific Partnerships to Strengthen Gender, Climate Change Responses and Sustainable Development
The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), Diverse Voices and Action for Equality and the Pacific Youth Council are organizing a Pacific regional meeting in Nadi, Fiji from 9 to 13 June. The objective of the meeting is to enable stakeholder groups to strengthen their national and regional work on gender equality and climate change.
