ALL EYES ON BALI FOR A CRUCIAL BREAKTHROUGH ON CLIMATE CHANGE
Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary:
Bali, the “island of the Gods,” is a prime example of the beauty of our natural
environment. At the same time, Indonesia has first-hand experience of the extreme weather events
caused by climate change. Bali is therefore a poignant setting for the forthcoming crucial
international negotiations on the way forward to save our planet from the devastating effects of
global warming.

NEW PUBLICATIONS
Five new publications have recently been brought out by the UNFCCC secretariat, covering a range of
issues related to the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol."Uniting on Climate" is the latest
update of the publication “Caring for Climate”. It provides an overview of how the
Convention and the Protocol evolved, broadly illustrates the commitments that countries have taken on
so far, and outlines several of the building blocks needed for an ambitious post-2012 climate change
framework. “Kyoto Protocol Mechanisms” explains the function of the Protocol’s
three market-based mechanisms – emissions trading, the clean development mechanism and joint
implementation.
The flyer “CDM Bazaar” describes how this web-portal allows carbon market buyers, sellers
and service providers to exchange information on clean development mechanism (CDM) project
opportunities. “The Nairobi Work Programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate
change” takes stock of progress so far in implementing the activities of the five-year
Programme – aimed at helping Parties make informed decisions on adaptation actions and measures
to respond to climate change – and explains new ways of becoming involved. Finally,
“Investment and Financial Flows to Address Climate Change” looks at the different means
at our disposal to mobilize the necessary investment and funds to address climate change.
