1. FRESH UN TALKS ON FUTURE CLIMATE ACTION SET TO BEGIN IN BONN
New talks on future action under the UN-sponsored climate change process will be launched in the week of 15 May in Bonn, Germany.

One round of discussions in the form of a "Dialogue on long-term cooperative action to address climate change by enhancing implementation of the Convention" will start with a workshop to be held in Bonn on 15 and 16 May. These talks involve all 189 contracting Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

A different track of talks involves the 163 Parties to the Kyoto Protocol. The first round of formal negotiations under the “Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol” will be held between 17 and 25 May. The focus of this body will be on further measures to be taken by industrialized countries for the period after 2012 when the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol ends.

2. BUILDING ON THE SUCCESS OF LIMA: ADAPTATION WORKSHOPS FOR ASIA AND AFRICA PLANNED AT UPCOMING BONN MEETING
The UNFCCC secretariat organized in collaboration with the UNEP regional office and the Peruvian National Council for the Environment (CONAM – Consejo Nacional del Ambiente) a regional workshop on adaptation for the Latin American region, from 18-20 April, in Lima, Peru. This workshop was the first of a series of regional adaptation workshops held pursuant to a request by the Conference of the Parties at its tenth session.

Latin America includes a wide variety of climatic zones and ecosystems. This renders the continent particularly vulnerable to diverse impacts of climate change, ranging from sea-level rise to glacial lake outburst floods. At the same time, assessments of impacts and vulnerability in the region are advanced enough to enable the identification of appropriate adaptation strategies. A number of Latin American countries have embarked on the development of comprehensive adaptation plans.

The workshop achieved its objectives of enabling the sharing of information on adaptation to climate change in different Latin American countries, as well as identifying actions to fill in the gaps and enhance further measures to promote better assessments of vulnerability and adaptation as well as promote effective adaptive responses in the region, both to current climate variability and future climate change.

3. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE KYOTO PROTOCOL COMPLIANCE MECHANISM
As the last of the bodies established under the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, the treaty’s Compliance Committee began its operations in March by electing the chairpersons of its enforcement and facilitative branches.

The Kyoto Protocol compliance mechanism is designed to strengthen the Protocol’s environmental integrity and the carbon market’s credibility. Its objective is to facilitate, promote and enforce compliance with the commitments under the Protocol. It is among the most comprehensive and rigorous systems of compliance for a multilateral environmental agreement. A strong and effective compliance mechanism is key to the success of the implementation of the Protocol.

The Compliance Committee is now fully operational and getting ready to consider questions of implementation. This follows work to adopt the Procedures and mechanisms relating to compliance under the Kyoto Protocol (decision 27/CMP.1), the election of the members and alternates of the facilitative and enforcement branches, and the election of the chairperson and vice-chairperson of the branches.
