The State of Qatar and the Republic of Korea have agreed to closely cooperate to make the next
major UN Climate Change Conference at the end of 2012 a success. The 2012 UN Climate Change
Conference, COP 18/CMP 8 (the 18th Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC, plus the 8th session of
the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol),
will take place in Qatar from 26 November to 7 December 2012.

Host country agreement signed for Durban Climate Change Conference 3

The Host Country Agreement for COP 17/CMP 7, which takes place in Durban, South Africa from 28
November to 9 December 2011, was signed in Panama today between UNFCCC Executive Secretary
Christiana Figueres, and COP 17/CMP 7 President-Designate Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Minister of
International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa. After the signing
ceremony Minister Nkoana-Mashabane said: "It is indeed a reflection of South Africa's
commitment to the success of the conference." The Executive Secretary expressed her
gratitude to the minister and, on behalf of all, said: "We are very much looking forward
to coming to Durban." The Host Country Agreement, which covers all the logistical
requirements for the conference, is an important landmark towards the success of a
COP/CMP.

Cuba deposits its instrument of acceptance of the amendment to Annex B to the Kyoto
Protocol 12 September 2011
At the second session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to
the Kyoto Protocol, held in Nairobi, Kenya from 6 to 17 November 2006, the Parties adopted an
amendment to Annex B to the Protocol by decision 10/CMP.2, in accordance with Articles 20 and
21 of the Protocol.
Cuba deposited its instrument of acceptance of the amendment to Annex B to the Kyoto
Protocol on 8 September 2011. The total number of States and regional economic integration
organizations that have deposited instruments of acceptance is now 25.

In her opening address at the UN Climate Change Conference in Bangkok, UNFCCC Executive
Secretary Christiana Figueres said that this session offers Parties a first opportunity to take
the practical issues agreed in Cancun forward in view of Durban, and expressed the hope that
the atmosphere of cooperation and compromise that characterized Cancun would prevail yet again.
She stressed that for Durban to be a success, the legal nature of mitigation commitments after
2012 needs to be addressed.

Japan's intended -25 percent target would be testimony to strategic economic thinking and

An assessment of the Cancun Agreements agreed at COP16 in Mexico in December is available on
the website. The assessment, by UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres, looks at what
governments have agreed to do in the field of international action on climate change in 2011,
and will contain regular updates charting progress made in the course of the year. It can be
accessed via a new entry point on the website entitled "Cancun Agreements: Overview."

Andorra deposits its instrument of accession to the Convention Andorra
deposited its instrument of accession to the Convention on 2 March 2011. The Convention will
enter into force for Andorra on 31 May 2011. Andorra's accession will bring the number of
Parties to the Convention - both States and regional economic integration organizations - to
195. A full list of the Parties who have ratified or acceded to the Convention can be found
here.

The UNFCCC secretariat wishes to inform Parties, observer States and observer
organizations that the first meeting of the Transitional Committee for the design of the
Green Climate Fund (decision 1/CP.16, paragraph 110) scheduled to be held on 14 - 15 March
2011, in Mexico City, Mexico has been postponed until the latter part of April
2011.

UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres has begun sending personal messages via her new
Twitter account, @CFigueres. The
UN's top climate change official is this week sending first tweets from Pakistan, where
around a million people are still homeless six months after last year's devastating floods.
With such disasters set to become more frequent and intense due to climate change, she is
drawing attention to the need for rebuilding in Pakistan to be climate-smart. Followers of the
UN climate change process can also receive updates on the latest UNFCCC documents by following
the UNFCCC's @UN_ClimateTalks Twitter account.

AWG-LCA meetings, as well as workshops pursuant to the Cancun Agreements, should take place in
Bangkok from Sunday, 3 April through Friday, 8 April 2011. These meetings and workshops are to
be preceded by preparatory regional group meetings from 30 March to 2 April. Further
