She said that while cities consume high levels of energy, they are also extremely vulnerable to climate
change impacts such as rising sea-levels, floods and storms, meaning they face the dual responsibility
of reducing emissions and decreasing the climate vulnerability of the urban poor.

Global Work Party, Sunday 10 October 2010 - Christiana Figueres voices support for grassroots
action to curb emissions
More than 7,000 events to fight climate change were held in at least 180 countries around the world on
Sunday, 10 October in a "Global Work Party" that is part of a growing grassroots movement to
curb greenhouse gases. In a video message to mark the day, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Christiana
Figueres, urged people around the world to join in. She said the Global Work Party could help push
governments into making compromises in their efforts to forge a treaty.

Figueres stressed the need to build on progress made thus far, and encouraged Parties to articulate
what could go into a politically balanced set of decisions under both the COP and the CMP at Cancun.
She further urged Parties to demonstrate flexibility and a spirit of compromise to reach a balanced
outcome, which may not be exhaustive in its detail, but should be comprehensive in scope.

combat climate change.” Acknowledging that political disagreements exist, she said governments
seem ready to discuss difficult issues and can break those deadlocks and bridge their differences:

Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), effective from 8 July. Ms Figueres assumes leadership
of the secretariat following extensive experience of high-level work across all areas of climate
change, including as a member of the Costa Rican negotiating team since 1995. She becomes the fourth
executive secretary of the UNFCCC.

The sixteenth Conference of the Parties (COP) and the sixth Conference of the Parties serving as the

Christiana Figueres appointed new UNFCCC Executive Secretary 17 May 2010
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Christiana Figueres as the new Executive Secretary of
the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat. Ms Figueres has been a member of the Costa Rican
negotiating team since 1995. She represented Latin America and the Caribbean on the Executive Board of
the Clean Development Mechanism in 2007 and was elected Vice President of the Bureau 2008-2009.

First World Congress on Cities and Adaptation to Climate Change 30 May

San Marino deposited its instrument of accession to the Kyoto Protocol on 28
April 2010. The Kyoto Protocol will enter into force for San Marino on 27 July 2010.
San Marino's acceptance brings the total number of States and regional economic integration
organizations which have deposited instruments of ratifications, accessions, approvals or acceptances
to 191. A full list of Parties who have acceded to the Kyoto Protocol can be found

Amendment to Annex I of the Convention to add the name of Malta
On 26 April 2010, the Depositary communicated to all Parties to the Convention an amendment to add
the name of Malta to the list in Annex I to the Convention by decision 3/CP.15. In accordance with
Article 16, the amendment will enter into force for all Parties to the Convention six months after
the date of the communication by the Depositary, except for those Parties that have notified the
Depositary, in writing, within that period of their non-acceptance of the amendment.

the end of 2009 concluded Sunday in Bonn with agreement to intensify the negotiating schedule in
order to achieve a strong outcome in Mexico at the end of the year. In addition to the negotiating
sessions already scheduled for 2010, governments decided at the Bonn April meeting to hold two
additional sessions of at least one week each.

Earth Hour 2010 - record participation in the global call for climate change
action
A record 4,000 cities and 126 countries around the world participated in the fourth annual Earth Hour
by switching off their lights for one hour on Saturday, 27 March at 8.30 pm. The symbolic action was
hailed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as "both a warning and a beacon of hope".

Speech by Yvo de Boer at 8th Informal Meeting on Further Actions against Climate
Change

Addressing the meeting, Yvo de Boer stressed the need for the climate change negotiations to get off
to a good start following Copenhagen, and for confidence in the process to be rebuilt. The priority
for 2010, he said, will be to reach consensus on as many of the outstanding issues as possible to
allow for the adoption of an agreed outcome in Mexico.

Executive Secretary leaves UNFCCC secretariat 18 February 2010

Mr. Yvo de Boer has announced today that he will resign his position as Executive Secretary of the
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change as of 1 July 2010. Mr. de Boer will be joining
the consultancy group KPMG as Global Adviser on Climate and Sustainability, as well as working with a
number of universities.

Second all-Africa Carbon Forum to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, on 3-5 March 2010

The programme is set and the list of participants is growing fast for the second all-Africa Carbon
Forum, set to take place at the United Nations Gigiri complex in Nairobi, Kenya. The forum, an
initiative of the Nairobi Framework partner UN agencies and the International Emissions Trading
Association (IETA), will build on the growing interest in the Kyoto Protocol's clean development
mechanism (CDM) in Africa.

First round of formal UN climate change negotiations to take place in April in Bonn,

The UNFCCC COP 15 Bureau decided on Monday, 22 February, that the next round of AWG-KP and AWG-LCA
meetings should take place in Bonn from Friday, 9 April through Sunday,11 April 2010. The AWG-KP and
AWG-LCA meetings are to be preceded by preparatory regional group meetings on 8 April. Further

2010 Rio Conventions Calendar The United Nations Convention to Combat
Desertification (UNCCD), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) – known as the "Rio Conventions" have
produced their calendar for 2010, which also marks the International Year of Biodiversity. Its

UNFCCC receives list of government climate pledges 1 February 2010

Following the conclusion of the climate change talks in Copenhagen, the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has received submissions of national pledges to cut and limit
greenhouse gases by 2020 from 55 countries. These countries together account for 78 percent of global
emissions from energy use.
