CGE Hands-on Training Workshop on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories for the African
Region, Pretoria, South Africa, 18 - 22 September 2006
The Consultative Group of Experts on national communications from Parties not included in Annex I to the
Convention (CGE) is a constituted expert body of the Convention with the overall goal of improving the
process of preparation of the second and subsequent national communications by providing technical advice
and support to Parties not included in Annex I to the Convention (non-Annex I Parties). At its eight
session, the Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP), mandated the CGE to provide technical advice
and support, by organizing and conducting workshops, including hands-on training workshops at the regional
or subregional level, on greenhouse gas inventories, vulnerability and adaptation, and mitigation for the
preparation of second and subsequent national communications by non-Annex I Parties.
The COP, at the same session, also adopted the guidelines for the preparation of national communications
from non-Annex I Parties (decision 17/CP.8). These guidelines are further elaborated through the
publication, by the secretariat, of a user manual and the conduct of CGE regional hands-on training
This hands-on training workshop was aimed at assisting non-Annex I Parties in
improving the preparation of the GHG inventories section of the national communications through training on
a wide range of approaches, methods and tools.
