The workshop is being organized in response to a request made by the Conference of the Parties (COP), at
its seventh session. By its decision 17/CP.7, the COP requested the secretariat to organize a workshop
before the sixteenth session of the SBSTA, with the aim of recommending terms of reference and an agenda
for the work to be conducted for developing definitions and modalities for including afforestation and
reforestation activities under Article 12 in the first commitment period.
