The Conference of the Parties (COP), at its seventh session, in its decision 21/CP.7, requested the
secretariat to organize one or possibly more workshops on methodologies for adjustments under Article 5,
paragraph 2 of the Kyoto Protocol with the participation of greenhouse gas inventory experts, experts
nominated to the UNFCCC roster of experts and experts involved in the preparation of the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report entitled "Good Practice Guidance and Uncertainty Management in
National Greenhouse Gas Inventories".
This workshop follows a first workshop on the same matter which took place in Athens, Greece, 3-5 April
2002. During that first workshop a proposal of a draft technical guidance on methodologies for adjustments
was elaborated (FCCC/SBSTA/2002/INF.5) and forwarded to the SBSTA at its sixteenth session.
The main purpose of this second workshop, as mandated by the SBSTA at its seventeenth session, is to assess
the case studies undertaken by the secretariat for simulating the calculation of adjustments under Article
5, paragraph 2, of the Kyoto Protocol. These case studies should be prepared following the draft technical
guidance mentioned above, as described in document FCCC/SBSTA/2002/INF.19. The SBSTA, at its seventeenth
session, invited Parties to submit their views on the draft technical guidance by 15 March 2003, taking
into account the results of the case studies. The results of the workshop will be considered by the SBSTA
at its eighteenth session, with the aim of completing the technical guidance on methodologies for
adjustments under Article 5, paragraph 2, of the Kyoto Protocol.
