Energy poverty reduction via access to alternate energy sources: Kuyasa low-cost
using retrofit, South Africa.
The Kuyasa low-cost housing retrofit, CDM project activity, demonstrates the interpretation
of the CDM rules to enable the crediting of suppressed demand. Specifically, the project
opens the way for replication of housing upgrades throughout South Africa, and generally
opening the way for other poverty alleviation projects in South Africa and internationally.

Learning about climate change - ten years on
Ten years on, there are some real success stories about how information, training and public
awareness actvities under the convention (Article 6)have evolved and improved. Rapid
devlopments in our scientific understanding of climate change have coincided with rapid
developments in our use of information and communication technologies to tell the climate
change story. Here we focus on just one area, access to the resuls of climate models. We
begin with the IPCC Third Assessment Report, then look at some successful examples and end
with a guess at possible futuredevelopments in the area.

Eco-engineering in a changing climate - or the long-term protection of the
environment against natural hazards and catastrophes
In a world where natural hazards such as storms and landslides are on the increase due to
climate change, the resulting soil loss may be catastrophic, particularly in mountainous
regions. This presentation demonstrates how we can use vegetation and forests to reinforce
soil on unstable slopes. Such inexpensive ecotechnology is extremely useful when managing a
site with regards to the long-term protection against natural hazards and catastrophes.

The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre
CCCCC represents the success story of the Caribbean region´s determination to adapt to
climate change as an important step towards sustainable development. The nations of the
Caribbean Community recognised the need for an instituition to focus and coordinate the
adaptation strategy. Within a year of its creation, the CCCCC has risen rapidly as a Centre
of Excellence, attracting support for critical climate change interventions.
