This section illustrates the impacts of placing fields in row and column in cross tab on data query.

Case I: Placing field in row.
Suppose the user wants to query a data for emissions from energy sector by Party, by Gas and by Year, the following fields should be placed in the cross tab (if it is not there already) by row. This can be done by clicking on the left arrows of Party, Gas and Year buttons and this is how the layout will look.

Note that the orientation of the directional arrow changes once it is placed in the cross tab. The horizontal arrow allows the user to move the position of selected field laterally and the vertical arrow allows moving the fields back into the page item.

For example, the user chooses to access data for CO₂ and CH₄ emissions from Energy Sector of two Parties for two years. The user would then choose CO₂ and CH₄ from the Gas dropdown list, any two Parties and any two years depending on the user's interest of query. Accordingly, the data would be displayed as illustrated.

Case II: Placing field in column
If the user wants to conduct a query for the same information as in Case I but with "Gas" field as column then the layout would look as follows:

And accordingly the data layout is also changed.
