The Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has reaffirmed that many climate risks will be exacerbated by climate change and that disaster risk reduction is an important element of adaptation planning. This paper, prepared in the context of the Nairobi work programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change, outlines the needs, practices, tools and systems for advancing the integration of adaptation and disaster risk reduction into
national policies and programmes. Parties may use the information contained in this technical paper as they consider implementing adaptation action under the Convention, including as part of the work of the Nairobi work programme on its focus area of adaptation planning and practices, and of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention on enhanced action on adaptation, in particular on disaster reduction strategies and means to address loss and damage associated with climate change impacts. The information could also be considered by Parties and organizations in their efforts in adaptation to address the adverse effects of climate change, in particular addressing climate risk assessment and management and strategies for disaster risk reduction, at the national and international levels.
