Abstract
This document presents an overview of the evolution of the Global Environment Facility Trust Fund from its pilot phase to its most recent replenishment period (GEF 4) and of the special climate change funds since their recent inception. It also presents a brief assessment of the current and necessary funding to assist developing countries by Convention priorities, namely: adaptation; mitigation; development and transfer of technologies; capacity-building; enabling activities; public
awareness and outreach; and activities referred to in Article 4, paragraph 8(h), of the Convention. This paper should be considered in conjunction with the report prepared by the secretariat, “Background paper on analysis on existing and planned investment and financial flows relevant to the development of effective and appropriate international response to climate changeâ€
