The Conference of Parties (COP), at its seventh session decided to establish a least developed countries expert group (LEG), to be nominated by Parties, with the objective of supporting the preparation and implementation strategy of national adaptation programmes of action (NAPAs).

The COP, at its sixteenth session, reviewed the progress of the work and terms of reference of the expert group, decided to extend the LEG for five years. Under its current term
(2011-2015), the LEG mandate includes the provision of support to LDCs on the NAPAs, the LDC work programme, strengthening gender-related considerations and considerations regarding vulnerable communities within LDcs, and considerations of medium- and long-term adaptation, in particular the national adaptation plan (NAP) process.

LEG work programme The SBI at its thirty-third session (COP 16) requested the LEG to develop a two-year rolling programme of work for consideration by the SBI at its first sessional meeting of each year, and to report on its work to the SBI at each of its sessions. LEG meeting reports The COP in decisions 29/CP.7 and 6/CP.16, requests the LEG to report on its work to the SBI at each of its sessions. All the reports to the SBI on the meetings of the LEG are available here
LEG support to the NAP process The COP in decision 5/CP.17 requested the LEG to provide technical guidance and support to the national adaptation plan (NAP) process. Information on the LEG support to LDCs for the NAP process is available here
LEG publications Since its establishment in 2001, the LEG has prepared various documents and publications including the LEG annotations to the NAPA guidelines and the step-by-step guide for implementing NAPAs. Click here for access to all LEG documents and publications
LEG workshops The LEG has conducted several workshops for LDCs on the preparation and implementation of NAPA taking into consideration capacity needs, regional distribution and language. More on the workshops here
