1. Puerto Rico

Name: pdf-icon Amira Odeh (72 kB)
Country: Puerto Rico
City: Bayamón

Description of the project: Amira started the “No More Bottles Campaign” in 2010 to present the results of a research project about the problems of bottled water and the lack of knowledge on the subject of water conservation among students in the university. This campaign began as an educational initiative and moved forward to action when the group achieved the installation of new drinking fountains in the college. Additionally, Amira led a second research project, managed to have the campaign spread around the campus and led the creation of a formal proposal to eliminate the sale of bottled water. This proposal was supported by members of the university's administration and in the present, she works to complete the objectives of this campaign. During these years she has led this effort including activities such as forums, conferences, educational events for the general public and projects to provide water in a more accessible manner to the students and staff of the university.

Description of the project: CLIMATEATE is a socio- environmental initiative that was founded in 2010 with the purpose of sharing experiences, projects and news on climate change worldwide. "Our Opportunity in Climate Change” was the name by which it was known the first three years. Subsequently, due to new alliances and desire to continue to grow, it becomes CLIMATÉATE, a larger, more open and with a new face to share space with all participants (regardless of their political position, religious, race, gender, etc.). Under this initiative, we have a number of projects to raise awareness and promote organic agriculture and sustainable habits. Similarly, our priority is to train the people involved (youth, organized groups, communities, etc.) to be able to make decisions on environmental issues involved in environmental issues and to generate entrepreneurship in green and efficient projects. Our primary mission? Support communities to adapt to climate change!

CLIMATEATE is an initiative to strengthen adaptation to climate change in Latin American communities. We have several pilot projects that have been developed since 2007 in several cities in Venezuela, such as ECOMANITOS, an Educative program called “NUESTRO CLIMA, NUESTRO FUTURO” and “RED VENEZOLANA DE CAMBIO CLIMATICO”.

Projects of CLIMATEATE:

ECOManitos: It is an activity that involves making objects through crafts and green games, using only elements that are friendly to the environment. .

Environmental Education Program: "Our Climate, Our Future": It is an educational program based on the promotion of information on climate change to urban and rural populations and formally (through educational curriculum structure) or informally (through lectures and occasional workshops).

Venezuelan Network of Climate Change: It is a tool for action and climate change research in Venezuela, thereby strengthening the union of NGOs, organized groups, students, research centers, etc. who wish to work together on the issue.
