The Lima Ministerial Declaration on Education and Awareness-raising that was adopted during the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties in December 2014, stresses that education, training, public awareness, public participation, public access to information, knowledge and international cooperation play a fundamental role in meeting the ultimate objective of the Convention and in promoting climate-resilient sustainable development. It emphasizes the need to integrate climate change-related themes into national curricula, while strengthening avenues for inclusive public participation and access to knowledge, particularly in ways that bolster the engagement of indigenous groups and non-governmental organizations, women and youth, the elderly, and persons with disability, within decision-making initiatives. The Declaration builds on the Doha Work Programme on Article 6 of the Convention that was adopted at COP 18 in 2012.

Marcin Korolec, President of COP 19/CMP 9 and Secretary of State, Ministry of the Environment, Poland, said that "this declaration is an important step towards bringing education back into the spotlight where it belongs”.
