Strategies for Mitigating Climate Change in Agriculture, a California Environmental Associates and Climate Focus authored report, finds that annual carbon emissions from global agriculture can be reduced by as much as 50 to 90 percent by 2030.
The report sheds light on an important, though still underestimated fact when it comes to mitigate greenhouse gases (GHG) in agriculture, which is: meat production and consumption. Since world meat consumption has grown over the last decades in line with rising income and population in emerging and developing countries, its emissions account for almost 50 to 70 percent of direct agricultural GHG emissions. It concludes:
“Reducing demand of meat by a relatively small amount would have a significant absolute impact on greenhouse gas emissions, human health and the environment associated with livestock production”.
