The 3rd International Conference on SIDS will be held in Apia, Samoa in Sept 2014. In July 2013, youth from the 3 SIDS regions (AIMS, Pacific and Carribean) were selected by the UNESCO to lead preparatory youth meetings for the SIDS conference in 2014. In August 2013, selected representatives from the 3 regions met in Barbados where an outcome document on youth involvement to combat climate change in SIDS was prepared and read to government officials of SIDS. The youth representatives from the Africa, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and South China Sea (AIMS) highlighted the need for a SIDS youth network ahead of the 2014 SIDS conference to create a network of committed youth representatives who would lead climate change debates and initiatives across the SIDS regions. A presentation will be given on how this network will be created, its aims and objectives, and how it will lead to novel and sustainable grass root initiatives to curb climate change in the SIDS.
