Climate Change: Children’s Challenge
report draws on five years of research, highlighting perspectives on climate change from young people
in the UK and all over the world. Children - unlike many adults - understand the reality of climate change.
It is already threatening their access to food, clean water, education and shelter, and these threats will
continue to grow unless we act now.
The report shows that three-quarters of 11-16 year-olds in the UK are worried about how climate change will
affect their future and wish the government would do more to tackle it.
The study highlights key strategies – led by reduced global beef consumption, reduced food waste, and
better farm nutrient management and production – that can deliver big climate wins while maintaining
food security and building resilience.

World Meteorological Day 2014 - Weather and Climate: Engaging Youth
This year's World Meteorological Day theme is
"Weather and climate: engaging youth." While today’s youth will benefit from the dramatic
advances being made in our ability to understand and forecast the Earth’s weather and climate, most
of them will also experience the increasing impacts of global warming.
The World Meteorological Organization has published a number of resource materials, such as the guide to meteorology and the revamped Youth Corner, to encourage young people to learn more

Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN)
CLEAN, the “Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness
Network” was launched in 2010 as a pathway project by academic, science, and national
administrations. It serves as a one-stop shop for interested audience to become literate with topics
surrounding climate and energy. With a comprehensive set of essential information on the key science and
teaching strategies, CLEAN offers a variety of tools and educational material to improve the understanding
of your impact on climate and climate's impact on you and society.
This International Institute for Sustainable Development and the Development Research Center of the State Council of China are collaborating on
an exploration of policy options to support China in developing a ‘green financial system’ and
to encourage such developments internationally. The ‘Greening China`s Financial System’ report
highlights the findings from the first phase of this partnership, such as that China’s financial
regulators are committed to advancing policies and regulations that will encourage green credit, and also
equivalent developments in insurance and securities.
UNESCO: Climate Change in Africa -
A Guidebook for Journalists
Journalists in Africa have critical roles to play in explaining the causes and effects of climate change,
in describing what countries and communities can do to mitigate and adapt to the impacts ahead, and in
reporting on what governments and companies do, or do not do, to respond to these challenges. This UNESCO
guidebook aims to support journalists by making available the most important background information in a
concise manner as well as practical recommendations that came out of consultations with journalists
involved in climate change reporting in Africa.

UNESCO video on ‘Learning to address climate change’
This animated video by UNESCO shows in four minutes why climate change education is important and how it

The “Alliance for Climate Education” (ACE) is an award-winning national nonprofit organization
dedicated to educating US high school students about the science behind climate change and inspiring them

The Will Steger Foundation invites young US citizens to

COP 19/CMP 9 Side Event on “Combatting Climate Change through Education and Training”
Organized by the United Nations Alliance on Climate Change
Education, Training and Public Awareness , this side event featured a lively panel discussion on the
fundamental importance of education and training for climate change action. It showcased the pivotal role
played by young people in advancing knowledge on mitigating and adapting to climate change. The large panel
included representatives from several UN Alliance member organizations, NGO partners and - of course -
youth leaders. The event was opened by the UN Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth, Mr. Ahmad Alhendawi,
who emphasized that climate change education was the key to building a sustaining and equitable future.
Attended by more than 200 participants, the Intergenerational
Inquiry was the highlight of the Young and Future Generations Day on 14 November. It gave youth
delegates from around the world the opportunity to engage with key players in the intergovernmental climate
change arena: UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Christiana Figueres, the UN Secretary General’s Envoy on
Youth, Ahmad Alhendawi and French Climate Ambassador, Jacques Lapouge were on the panel alongside Nathan
Niedermeier and Sylvia Yirenkyi, two youth delegates. The discussion focused on intergenerational equity as
a moral principle that can unite developing and developed country Parties with civil society, older,
younger and future generations and all genders in pursuit of climate justice and an ambitious post 2015

GHGMI offers new online courses on GHG accounting and management
The Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI) has expanded its education
programme, which includes online courses and diploma programmes on GHG accounting and carbon
management. All courses are self-paced and may be taken individually or as part of a diploma programme.
The Institute offers financial assistance for course and diploma fees to individuals working for
non-profit, non-governmental organizations, as well as those working in governments and small to
medium-sized enterprises in developing countries.
Farming First launches Guide to UNFCCC Negotiations on Agriculture
guide aims to provide key stakeholders with a one-stop source of information on the UNFCCC discussion
on agriculture by offering a series of videos, infographics, quotes and key facts and figures on the
relationship between agriculture and climate change. Developed by Farming First, a coalition of
multi-stakeholder organizations that aims to articulate, endorse and promote practical, actionable

Think Forward Film Festival on climate change, energy efficiency and renewable energy
Think Forward Film Festival is a project of the International Center for Climate Governance (ICCG) that aims at
studying, discussing, and disseminating information on climate change and issues related to energy
efficiency and renewable energy through short and feature films and discussions with film directors and
actors. The annual festival will take place in Venice, Italy from 6-7 December 2013. Deadline for

Climate Change Roundtable is a bi-annual meeting of regional and national governments, organizations,
partners and donors concerned by climate change. It is the premier forum in the Pacific Region to share
ideas on climate change and to ensure coordination in support of Pacific Island Countries and Territories
(PICTs) efforts on climate change. The Roundtable is organised by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional
Environment Programme in collaboration with other organizations.
Global Power Shift summit brings together more than 500 climate activists from 134 countries to work on
building a global movement to solve the climate crisis. Global Power Shift is being convened by 350.org, an
international climate campaign that has organized over 20,000 climate demonstrations worldwide, and a
coalition of partners including Avaaz, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace International, Jubilee South and
numerous youth organizations. During the summit seasoned activists that were behind some of the past
decade’s most successful environmental and social justice campaigns, will train participants in
campaign strategy, online organizing, communications, and public mobilization. Participants will then head
home to organize their own national Power Shift summits, mobilisations, and campaigns around the world.
Awards for Excellence in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation
Care Awards are an effort to recognize excellence in initiatives to counter climate change and
recognize efforts towards mitigation and adaptation projects by industries, communities and individuals.
Projects include innovations for climate protection, emission reduction in small and medium enterprises,
emission reduction in large scale industries, and community based mitigation and adaptation to climate
change with respect to water resources, land use, land use change and forestry. Applications are open for
projects from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The
application deadline is 31 July 2013.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon holds virtual dialogue with youth
On the margins of the UN Climate Change Conference Bonn June 2013, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited
youth delegates to share their hopes and concerns about climate change at a virtual dialogue. The
Secretary-General stressed the importance of young people in combatting climate change and their role as
‘agents of change’ to achieve a more ‘loving and caring’ relationship with our
planet. He pledged to ensure that youth will have a ‘seat at the table’ at the 2014 climate
change summit of world leaders that he will convene to mobilize the necessary political will for an
ambitious new climate change regime by 2015. View the

Adaptation and Mitigation E-Learning (CAMEL) is a free, comprehensive, multi-disciplinary multi-media

Council for Science and the Environment of the United States of America. CAMEL provides over 300
interdisciplinary topic areas and numerous resource types to give the educator the tools they need to teach
about climate change causes, consequences, solutions and actions. The educator is able to create courses,
textbooks, administer exams and surveys, invite others and collaborate around teaching materials,
strategies and assessment.

The biennial Local
Climate Solutions for Africa Congress series (LOCS) provides a platform for African local and national
governments, scientists, technical experts, development partners, business, industry and civil society to
engage on the complex issues and innovative solutions related to urbanisation in Africa through the context
of climate change. This year’s Congress, convened by ICLEI – Local Governments for
Sustainability in partnership with the host city Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, will provide an opportunity to
strengthen the sharing of global good practice and locally appropriate solutions and technologies towards
accelerated climate action on the ground. Congress themes will include a strong emphasis on local
leadership, financing and accelerated integrated action at the local and sub-national level, underpinned by
a special focus on integrated planning towards addressing climate resilience in Africa.
toolkit provides access to articles, videos and various other resources that will assist indigenous
peoples, local communities, policy makers and other stakeholders in accessing research on climate change
adaptation and mitigation. Indigenous societies have elaborated coping strategies to deal with unstable
environments, and in some cases, are already actively adapting to early climate change impacts. While the
transformations due to climate change are expected to be unprecedented, indigenous knowledge and coping
strategies provide a crucial foundation for community-based adaptation measures. The toolkit is available
in English, French, Spanish, Russian and Portuguese.
Developed by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme, "The
Children Take Action – a Climate Change Story" is a children's story book that pursues
the twofold aim of increasing literacy skills and knowledge about climate change among primary school kids
in Kiribati. In a very simplified way, the book enables children to learn the basics of climate change and
its impacts on our environment. The story book is available in both English and te-Kiribati and will
accompany the new syllabus and teacher guides currently being developed for Kiribati primary schools.
The Great Transformation: Climate – Will We Get Our Act Together?
Based on a report prepared by the German Advisory Council on Global Change, this
comic book aims to showcase how a paradigm shift towards a low carbon economy, sustainable consumption
patterns and sustainable lifestyles can be achieved. Through ‘graphic interviews’ nine
scientists from different disciplines (climate change, economics, behavioural science among others) explain
problems and highlight solutions towards achieving the ‘great transformation’. The comic book
is part of a wider research project on communicating complex future issues to the public. It also contains
additional educational materials and recommendations for further reading.

My World. The United Nations Global Survey for a Better World
World is a global survey developed by the United Nations with several partner organizations. It asks
individuals which six of sixteen possible issues they think would make the most difference to their lives,
one of them being action taken on climate change. Citizens of all ages, genders and backgrounds,
particularly the world's poor and marginalized communities, are called upon to get involved and let
the world know their priorities and views, so that world leaders can be informed as they begin the process
of setting the next global development agenda.
Literacy: Navigating Climate Conversations" is a free course offered by the University of British
Columbia tackling both the scientific and socio-political dimensions of climate change. The course
introduces the basics of the climate system, models and predictions, human and natural impacts, mitigative
and adaptive responses, and the evolution of climate policy. Furthermore, it explores the basic concepts
and terms needed to understand the science of climate change, and the available mitigation, adaptation and

The course aims to bring climate change education outside the science classroom into all subject areas
liable to be affected by climate change. These include as ethics, social studies, economics and political
science, among many others.
Using a holistic approach, pedagogical approaches and techniques in their own school environment, teachers
can develop the capacities to facilitate climate change mitigation, adaptation and disaster risk reduction
learning. Teacher education institutions can also use the course to update CCESD content in their
pre-service and in-service training programmes through pedagogical frameworks, exercises, regional
resources and guidelines.

On 17 February 2013 the Forward
on Climate campaign brought together 40,000+ people from more than 30 states across the US, including
students, scientists and indigenous peoples, to tell President Obama to move forward on climate change. The
event, organized by 350.org, was reported as one of the largest climate
rallies in US history supported by more than twenty solidarity rallies across the country and more than one
million online activists.
Security and Climate Change Challenge Badge is designed to help educate children and young people about
climate change and food security while encouraging them to take action against global warming,
environmental degradation and hunger in the world. By carrying out activities described in the manual young
people will identify and take actions to reduce their environmental footprint and learn how to make better
consumer and life-style choices.
Think Tank Map provides an overview on the think tanks active in the field of climate change
governance. Through an interactive world map, this tool makes it possible to understand where research
organizations working on climate change are based and which projects are currently worked on. The Think
Tank Map also aims to be a catalyst for new cooperation opportunities, allowing stakeholders, researchers,
institutions, and the media to be informed on past, ongoing and future activities.
Cold, We Share Together“ is a 12-episode documentary that showcases adverse effects of climate
change in ten countries on five continents. The documentary was co-produced by China Central Television
(CCTV), Huafeng Meteorological Media Group and Central Xinying Group and builds on interviews with about
100 experts and government officials.

The American rapper Eminem and the Kenyan hip hop group TS1 have produced a remix of Eminem’s song
„Not Afraid“ to raise awareness on climate change issues. The music
video was played on 18 December 2012 throughout the day on two giant screens in New York City’s
Time Square. The project was realized by Connect4Climate in cooperation with MTV and Artists Project Earth.
Webinar "Governing Climate Change: Shifting Priorities in Urban Decision Making"
The Security and Sustainability Forum is a public interest educational organization that convenes global
experts in free events to address threats to society from climate and other disruptions to natural systems.
webinar will take place on Thursday, 31 January 2013 and explore the effects of climate change on urban
governance. Trends of shifting priorities in decision making and community engagement are being seen in
light of challenges posed by climate change and urbanization. Learning partner organizations for the series
include Abt Associates, the World Bank, the Woodrow Wilson Center, the Penn Institute for Urban Research
and the International Housing Coalition.

Seeds of knowledge. Contributing to Climate Change Solutions
of Knowledge booklet presents 24 case studies from 17 countries on grassroots solutions to the impacts
of climate change. The publication aims to show that grassroots, community-led responses are already
playing an essential role in building resilience to climate change across all regions of the world. With
the right levels of investment and support, such initiatives can be scaled up and become a central
component in reducing climate risks and supporting the transition to an inclusive Green Economy.

At this side event the UNFCCC secretariat together with senior representatives of the other founding
members will launch the United
Nations Alliance on Climate Change Education, Training and Public Awareness. High-level representatives
from Parties and the Global Environment Facility will highlight examples of successful cooperation with
founding members on climate change education, training and public awareness activities. The
Alliance’s objectives will be presented and its founding members, including FAO, UNEP, UNESCO,
UNFCCC, UNICEF, UNITAR and WMO will showcase how they will provide support to and benefit of this new
interagency cooperation. Participants will be invited to share their views on the Alliance’s draft
framework for action and contribute to its further development.
Brussels. European youth convergence for climate justice" is a youth conference bringing together
young activists from all over Europe during the second week of the UN climate talks in Doha, Qatar. From 1
to 8 December over 100 people will come together to follow the negotiations, link up with activists and
civil society in Qatar, share skills and learn about climate justice and act in solidarity, putting
pressure on the European Union without having to travel all the way to Qatar.
At this year's fifth annual "Intergenerational
Inquiry" youth delegates from around the world will engage with high-level representatives and the
UNFCCC Executive Secretary to discuss the role and importance of young people in the UNFCCC process. The
Inquiry will continue its tradition of being one of the most lively events on the United Nations Climate
Change Conference calendar. Guests will be invited to gain a better understanding of youth’s
perspective through the climate change game "Turn the Round" and a reverse question and answers
eighth Conference of Youth (COY8) brings together international youth to learn about the UNFCCC, build
networks and work on climate justice issues worldwide. COY8 will take place in Doha, Qatar, from 23 to 25
November, and aims to deliver a conference that seasoned campaigners and beginners alike can attend,
providing a platform to learn from each other on how to address the pressing environmental issues of our
Youth Climate Movement was simultaneously launched across more than a dozen countries in the Middle
East and Northern Africa on 10 November 2012. The movement, the first of its kind in the Arab region,
unites hundreds of grass roots activists and was established with the backing of campaigners from regional
and international organizations.
Climate Change Cartoon Competition aims to bring young people to the center of climate change debates
by encouraging youth from the Caribbean to portray issues of concern related to climate change in their
region. The call for submissions for the cartoon competition runs until 15 October 2012.
The report "Climate Change in the Indian Mind" is based on a national survey conducted
of 4,031 Indian adults in 2011, using a combined urban and rural sample. The study was designed to
investigate the current state of public climate change awareness, beliefs, attitudes, policy
support, and behavior, as well as public observations of changes in local weather and climate
patterns and self-reported vulnerability to extreme weather events.
Think Forward Film Festival and Short Film Competition on Climate Change and Renewable
The Think Forward Film Festival was created with the aim to investigate, discuss
and disseminate, through short films and feature films, the theme of climate change and the issues
surrounding the use of energy efficiency and renewable energy. The second edition of the Think
Forward Film Festival will be held in Venice from 30 November to 1 December, 2012. This year, the
festival is launching its first international film competition involving short films made using
different techniques, including animation that are focused on the themes of climate change and
renewable energy, produced after 1 January 2010.
Climate Change and Environmental Education - A companion to the Child Friendly Schools
The module “Climate
Change and Environmental Education” is a companion to UNICEF’s Child Friendly Schools Manual.
Over the past decade, the child-friendly schools approach has emerged as UNICEF’s means to advocate for
and promote quality education for every girl and boy. Child-friendly schools enable all children to achieve
their full potential. The purpose of this module is to provide in-depth information on how Climate Change and
Environmental Education (CCEE) can be integrated into the design, implementation and practice of
child-friendly schools. Many schools are incorporating CCEE in their curricula. While it is impossible to
present a complete account of these efforts, this module includes the most relevant examples and illustrates
the diversity of approaches.
UNU Video Series on Traditional Knowledge and Climate Science
Series on Traditional Knowledge and Climate Science released by the United Nations University Institute
of Advanced Studies focuses on some of the key links between traditional knowledge and science regarding
climate change. With deep connections to nature, the world's indigenous people and local communities are
experiencing some of the most pronounced affects of climate change.
UNICEF's publication on `Disaster
Risk and Education` showcases how UNICEF integrates disaster risk reduction (DRR) into its
