Work Areas

The NWP is structured around nine work areas, consistent with the action-oriented sub-themes of Decision 2/CP.11.  All of these work areas are vital for increasing the ability of countries to adapt.

Activities

The SBSTA concluded the review of the NWP at its thirty-fourth session and also requested the secretariat to undertake interim activities under the Nairobi work programme, detailed in document FCCC/SBSTA/2011/2, para 14-25. The  decision adopted by the Conference of Parties at its seventeenth session in Durban mandated new activities to further the implementation of the NWP.

The COP decision adopted in Durban further requests the SBSTA to reconsider, at its thiry-eighth session, the work areas of the NWP with a view to making recommendations to the COP at its nineteenth session on how best to support the objectives of the work programme; this process would further inform the organization of potential future areas of work that could also support the scientific and technical work under the Cancun Adaptation Framework, as appropriate.

• Enhanced capacity at international, regional, national, sectoral and local levels to further identify and understand impacts, vulnerability, and adaptation responses, and to select and implement practical, effective and high priority adaptation actions
• Improved information and advice to the Conference of the Parties (COP) and its subsidiary bodies on the scientific, technical and socio-economic aspects of impacts, vulnerability and adaptation, including facilitating the implementation of decision 1/CP.10, where relevant
• Enhanced development, dissemination and use of knowledge from practical adaptation activities
• Enhanced cooperation among Parties, relevant organizations, business, civil society and decision makers, aimed at enhancing their ability to manage climate change risks
• Enhanced integration of actions to adapt to climate change with those to achieve sustainable development.
