The objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity include the conservation of biological diversity,
the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the
utilization of genetic resources. The Convention recognizes that biological diversity is about more than
plants, animals and micro organisms and their ecosystems – it is about people and our need for food
security, medicines, fresh air and water, shelter, and a clean and healthy environment in which to live.
Parties to the CBD have acknowledged both the need to facilitate biodiversity adaptation and the contribution
of biodiversity to broader adaptation activities, particularly to the most vulnerable regions and ecosystems.

The pledge responds to the sub theme stated in paragraph 3(a) (iii) of decision 2/CP.11 and to the need
identified in paragraph 43 (d) of the report on the workshop on
climate modelling, scenarios and downscaling (FCCC/SBSTA/2008/9).
The project will strengthen research on biophysical climate systems relating to biodiversity to reduce
scientific uncertainties associated with climate projections and thus improve the quality of scenarios and
increase the confidence of decision makers in climate and climate impacts information
