CATHALAC, established in 1992, is an autonomous non-profit international organization that promotes
sustainable development through applied scientific research and education on water resources and the
environment.

Action Pledge: Regional Visualization and Monitoring System (SERVIR) (received in August
2008)

The purpose of this project is to develop regional capacity in the use of satellite-based monitoring
and forecasting applications for improved adaptation to climate change, at the level of Mesoamerica
and the Caribbean.
SERVIR is a regional visualization and monitoring system that integrates satellite and other
geospatial data for improved scientific knowledge and decision making by managers, researchers,
students, and the general public. SERVIR addresses the societal benefit areas of the Global Earth
Observation System of Systems (GEOSS): disasters, ecosystems, biodiversity, weather, water, climate,
oceans, health, agriculture and energy.
This pledge contributes to the areas of work:
- Methods and tools;
- Data and observations;
- Climate modelling, scenarios and downscaling;
- Climate-related risks and extreme events;
- Technologies for adaptation.

Action Pledge: Regional Masters Degree in Climate Change (received in August 2009)

The Regional Master’s degree in Climate Change at CATHALAC is a programme designed from the
Latin American reality perspective in order to train professionals capable of developing solutions to
reduce vulnerability, propose adaptation measures and mitigation strategies customized to the local
context. Additionally, participants will be able to create long‐term sustainable
development projects, through application of in‐depth knowledge acquired on the evolving global
socio-economic context, and international negotiations and related
mechanisms.

- Adaptation planning and practices;
- Climate modeling, scenarios and downscaling;
