Compendium on methods and tools to evaluate impacts of, and vulnerability and adaptation to, climate change

weADAPT by Stockholm Environmental Institute (SEI) and partners
Description is an online knowledge platform dealing with climate adaptation issues (including the synergies between adaptation and mitigation) that enables practitioners, researchers and policy makers to access credible, high quality information and to share experiences and lessons learnt with the weADAPT community. It is designed to facilitate learning, exchange, collaboration and knowledge integration to build a professional community of practice on adaptation issues while developing policy-relevant tools and guidance for adaptation planning and decision-making.

The platform includes innovative new tools for ‘knowledge integration’, our Adaptation Layer - a Google Earth interface to show ‘who is doing what, where’ and to create 'adaptation stories', a new climate adaptation Knowledge Base, customized user and organisation profiles and adaptation decision support tools such as the prototype Adaptation Decision Explorer (ADx), a tool to screen and prioritize adaptation options. We are also increasingly linking to and ultimately aiming to integrate in useful ways with the Climate Information Portal (CIP).

Ongoing weADAPT development is facilitated by the Stockholm Environment Institute (specifically SEI Oxford), in collaboration with the Climate Systems Analysis Group (CSAG) at the University of Cape Town, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and an expanding set of other partners.

Appropriate Use Resources provided through the weADAPT platform enable users to: explore historical climatic conditions and the range of plausible climate futures for a given location or area; assess climate risks and vulnerabilities in both technical and participatory ways; make robust adaptation decisions; and share experiences and lessons. Users include, professionals and practitioners that advise on climate adaptation strategies and actions, be it project officers, planners, researchers, policy or technical advisors. weADAPT is designed to support sustained use and engagement, as well as once off use where appropriate.
Scope All regions
Key Output Targeted guidance material on various approaches, methods and tools, climate data (via CIP), robust adaptation options, placed-based information regarding adaptation efforts and associated experiences.
Key Input Contextual information, stated preferences, experiences to share and lessons learned.
Ease of Use Some technical know-how is helpful.
Training Required Entry-level use does not require training, however the application of certain tools and the interpretation of results require some technical expertise that may entail additional training.
Training Available Training on the use of climate information, methods for vulnerability assessment and climate risk communication is being provided by CSAG and SEI through annual short courses
Computer Requirements Any web browser

The weADAPT platform is being used and further developed through projects and partnerships with CDKN, Sida, UCT, CIFOR, ENDA, DfID, Oxfam, Google, the Government of Kenya, the City of Cape Town and others.

Cost All tools and materials are free to use; if downscaled climate data is required for additional weather stations there is some cost involved; support services, including tailored training, and are also on offer, costings can be supplied on request. We are also happy to develop joint proposals in order to progress collaborations.
