Inequitable access to food, shelter, and medicines puts women and girls especially at risk to climate change
related impacts. The United Nations Development Programme’s 2010 (issue no 2, MDG 3) on Millennium
Development Goals and Climate Change Adaptation gives examples of how climate change adaptation actions can
empower women and promote gender equality. In Samoa, for example, village councils of chiefs are
engaged in facilitating gender-sensitive project implementation, as well as involving women in disaster
preparedness and response planning for agriculture-based livelihoods to increase the resilience of women to
the adverse effects of climate change.*
