Engaging women in adaptation actions in the Pacific

Inequitable access to food, shelter, and medicines puts women and girls especially at risk to climate
change related impacts. The United Nations Development Programme’s 2010 (issue no 2, MDG 3) on
Millennium Development Goals and Climate Change Adaptation gives examples of how climate change
adaptation actions can empower women and promote gender equality. In Samoa, for example,
village councils of chiefs are engaged in facilitating gender-sensitive project implementation, as
well as involving women in disaster preparedness and response planning for agriculture-based
livelihoods to increase the resilience of women to the adverse effects of climate change.*
