| Description
|
Association of World Reindeer Herders is an international NGO for the over 20 indigenous peoples in the circumpolar Arctic that base their lives on reindeer herding (pastoralism). The international collaboration of reindeer herding peoples began in 1990, made possible through the work of the Bruntland Commission/ Soviet Science Academy and the fall of the iron curtain. The NGO was established in 1997, and is today working in 28 different reindeer herding regions spanning Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Mongolia, China, US/Alaska and Canada. The Association works very closely together with International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry (www.reindeercentre.org), funded by the Norwegian Government and supported by the Arctic Council to enhance Arctic collaboration. The Association has a regular observer status in the Arctic Council (www.arctic-council.org). The Association together with international academic partners have also established University of the Arctic EALÁT Institute, that works with research, education, training and outreach relevant to reindeer herders (www.ealat.org). |
