Title

Christian Aid's climate change framework

Partner Christian Aid

Date of submission 01/04/2009

Description

Programmes:

a)  Christian Aid will support and strengthen the work of its partners in the South to respond to the threat that a changing climate has already and will in future have on the livelihoods of the poorest and most vulnerable men and women. Key elements of this work will focus on community-based adaptation to both protect and transform livelihoods, including developing a forward-looking analysis of climate change based on both the latest climate science and local knowledge. It will draw on relevant best practice from humanitarian, disaster-risk reduction and long-term livelihoods development work to achieve an integrated approach to climate risk management that does not sacrifice long-term sustainability and resilience for short-term expediency and recognises the interaction of climate with other risk factors.

Advocacy:

b)  We will build the capacity of grassroots partners to engage in emerging national and international policy debates on adaptation. Methods will include organising conferences and workshops on climate change adaptation, promoting web-based exchanges on adaptation issues and supporting partners to participate as active observers in the United Nations climate talks.

c)  Christian Aid will lobby rich nation governments – jointly with our civil society allies – to make them aware of and respond to:

  1. the full human impacts of climate change in the developing world;
  2. the risks of delaying any further political action to combat global warming;
  3. their existing obligations under the Convention, including in relation to adaptation financing;
  4. the importance of providing adequate levels of adaptation funding and funding for low-carbon development, in addition to existing ODA;
  5. the need for any new climate deal to be pro-poor and centred on the principle of “common but differentiated” responsibilities and capabilities.
