Summary Note
|
The Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) is a partnership of the
International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) system to support the implementation of
the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA). The partnership is managed by the World Bank
on behalf of the participating donor partners and other partnering stakeholders.
GFDRR provides technical and financial assistance to high risk low- and middle-income
countries to mainstream disaster reduction in national development strategies and plans to
achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). GFDRR's Mainstreaming Disaster Risk
Reduction in Development (Track-II) provides technical and financial assistance to low and
middle income countries to mainstream disaster risk reduction into their country assistance
and poverty reduction strategies. Climate Change adaptation is one of the key areas of
intervention under this track.
GFDRR currently finances 20 projects that help countries better adapt to the challenges that
climate change poses. These projects support activities such as the development of
probabilistic risk assessment platforms, the creation of disaster risk atlases, and the
establishment / improvement of loss model tools.

Examples
|
- Facilitating provision of baseline vulnerability information on flood exposed communities
in Ethiopia. This project aims to produce vulnerability related information on community
livelihoods in a selected flood exposed area of Ethiopia in order to provide data to the
national livelihoods database under development by DPPC/USAID; and to provide information to
DPPC to increase their knowledge and ability to deal with risk reduction in flood exposed
areas of the country and to facilitate establishment of courses on risk/vulnerability
analyses and management at Addis Ababa University. (Ethiopia)
- Climate change and future flood risks in Bangladesh-The objective of this proposed GFDRR
activity is to determine the impacts of climate change on the future characteristics of the
flood (e.g. depth, extent, duration, frequency, and timing) and assess future vulnerabilities
in the context of agriculture and food security. Key indicators include the development of
appropriate datasets and information and integration into the identified menu of agricultural
adaptation options and recommendations.(Bangladesh)
- Hazard Risk Management Program in Nepal-The objective of this program is to take
stock of ongoing hazard risk mitigation initiatives and programs in Nepal; engage dialogue
with government counterparts, development partners and disaster experts; develop strategic
recommendation on priority areas for the multidonor trust Fund (TF) and its strategic
direction; and develop a draft TF implementation plan. (Nepal)
