Background
The Department of Science, Technology & Education of the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, aided by the
Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, hosted the Asian regional workshop on adaptation to climate change.
The workshop, which took place in Beijing from 11-13 April 2007, was organized by the Secretariat of the
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Participants included representatives from
countries across Asia (ranging from the Middle East to Southeast Asia), as well as representatives from
developed countries, international organizations and non-governmental organizations.
Topics covered during the workshop included integrated impact and vulnerability assessments, and implementing
adaptation actions at the local, national and regional level in a variety of sectors (such as agriculture,
water resources and health) and in specific areas such as coastal zones and mountainous regions. The
integration of adaptation into sustainable development was also discussed along with opportunities for the
enhancement of relevant international collaboration in the region (North-South and South-South) and funding
opportunities for adaptation measures.
The UNFCCC secretariat convened this workshop in accordance with decision 1/CP.10, under the guidance of
the Chair of the Subsidary Body for Implementation.
