image United Arab Emirates first Party to accept Doha Amendment
The United Arab Emirates has become the first Party to the Kyoto Protocol to formally accept the amendment to the Protocol adopted at the eighth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol in Doha, Qatar. The United Arab Emirates deposited their instrument of acceptance on 26 April 2013. The amendment is expected to enter into force after three quarters of the Parties to the Protocol submit their instruments of acceptance to the Depositary.

In his pdf-icon letter (60 kB) dated 13 February 2013 to the Governments of the Kyoto Protocol Parties, the Secretary General of the United Nations congratulated Parties on the adoption of the Amendment and encouraged its prompt acceptance.

Reacting to the fact that the global concentration of heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the atmosphere last week passed the 400 parts per million mark, the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Christiana Figueres on Monday called for a greatly stepped-up response to climate change by all parts of society.

image ADP 2 workshop on low-emission development opportunities

Participants at the ADP 2 meeting in Bonn discussed examples of what can be done to address issues such as energy efficiency, renewable energy and low-emission technology. It emerged that a breadth of mitigation actions are already taking place both at national and international levels, and ample opportunities exist to further scale up these actions.
image Prototype NAMA registry now operational
30 April 2013
The secretariat has launched a fully operational prototype registry to record developing countries nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs).  Developing country Parties can now electronically submit and update information on their potential mitigation actions in need of support as well as having their own mitigation actions recognized.
